Self-care for dermatitis

Red, cracked, itchy or sore hands could be more than just a cold-weather dry skin problem. It could be a sign of dermatitis.

Hand dermatitis is characterised by flare-ups of itchy, sore skin that is red, brown or grayish in colour. In some cases, the skin may also be swollen and develop blisters and sores. But it is easily treatable with self-care, or medications. Hand dermatitis comes in various forms, including contact dermatitis, dyshidrotic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis.

Contact dermatitis is a reaction to some cell-damaging irritant or allergen such as soap, perfume, cosmetics or cleaning products.

Dyshidrotic dermatitis usually occurs in response to stress and is characterised by a rash that typically starts on the sides of the fingers as small, itchy bumps, but can affect the feet as well as the hands.

Atopic dermatitis indicates an allergy to something in the environment and may occur together with symptoms of asthma or hay fever. This condition is usually genetic, and may also be particularly severe during the winter months. It is not limited to hands. It can affect just about any area of the body, although it usually affects the skin in the bend of the elbow and the back of the knees.

Researchers from the University of Kansas Medical Center found that this condition affects about 10 per cent of women and 5 per cent of men in the US, and as many as one in three healthcare workers and cosmetologists whose hands are in frequent contact with water. The disease can be very disabling, depending on its severity. It can also have an emotional impact, due to the stress that can be caused just by the prospect of shaking hands with another individual.

People affected by the condition should refrain from washing hands too frequently to avoid the progression of hand dermatitis. Affected individuals should use lukewarm or cool water when washing hands or bathing, they should use a hypoallergenic soap, and should frequently apply a moisturizing cream or ointment.

Prescription treatment is also available for those severely affected by hand dermatitis. Corticosteroid-containing ointments or lotions can provide some relief of itching as well as treat inflammation. Antihistamines and oral corticosteroids are also available to help ease intense itching or swelling. In any case a dermatologist should be consulted before taking any treatment.

Are We Skin Washed or Brain Washed?

Walking around the beauty counters at the department store I have to wonder how much of the information we are being fed about skincare is actual fact, and how much of it is money-making hype.  We are told to cleanse, tone and moisturize – that means that we need to buy 3 products, none of which could be called cheap and many of which could fund a small deposit on a house!  Looking back to the days of our grandmothers, and even our mothers, they did perfectly fine with old fashioned soap and water, and witch-hazel if a little “extra” help was required.

I think women today are being brain washed into thinking that our skin needs these chemicals, when in fact, what it needs is good nutrition!  If you eat and sleep right, your skin will reflect that.  Increase your drinking water intake and you’ll see just as big an improvement as the top skincare manufacturers tell you their product will achieve.   It’s not a good shopping life.

I’m occasionally tempted by a pretty little pot of cream, but it’s the packaging that lures me into the purchase. I’m sure that my diet and drinking water intake do far more good than a potion or lotion ever could!

Surveillance team for Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman, (40), is now having a surveillance team which is located outside her Sydney mansion, to provide her with 24 hour close observation, as she is worried for her own safety.

Fox Studios, who care a lot for their leading lady, has ordered the security guards to protect her from the paparazzi. The security team is parking in a solar-paneled mini-van with tinted windows outside of Kidman’s Darling Point estate, with open eyes on every move of the paparazzi, who hang around her.

The van will stay, as long as Kidman is in Australia, for her latest role in the film of the director Baz Luhrmann “Australia”. Production will begin next week and Kidman is intending to stay in her home country for the rest of the year.

Do you think that Kidman will pay from her own cash to keep the security with her after the movie is finished?! Or does she feel safer in the US?! It’s known that she is Australian but has dual citizenship of Australia and the United States.

Microsoft launched Windows XP and Office for US $3

Microsoft has launched an inexpensive educational software package available to governments that purchase and supply computers directly to primary and secondary students for their personal use at home and for schoolwork. It will be released in the second half of 2007 and will be sold for mere US$3 to qualifying governments. The product release is part of the expansion of Microsoft’s Unlimited Potential program. The package includes Windows XP Starter Edition, Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007, Microsoft Math 3.0, Learning Essentials 2.0 for Microsoft Office and Windows Live Mail desktop.

Microsoft founder and Chairman Bill Gates has made this announcement in Beijing, China and said that the expansion of Unlimited Potential will focus on three areas: education, innovation, and jobs and economic opportunity. This means that that will help bring social and economic opportunity to about five billion people who are not yet realizing the benefits of technology.

"Over time, students won't need to have textbooks. The cost of (the tablet) will be less than buying textbooks, and yet the experience of using it is dramatically superior to what you would have had with a paper-based experience," Gates said.

Microsoft and others are working hard to reach out to the developing world through lower-cost technologies such as cell phones and television to provide basic computing and educational opportunities, according to Gates.

Incessant Swelling of Migrants Population- A Danger in coming??

There was a net increase of 185,000 in Britain's population due to immigration in 2005- the equivalent of an extra 500 people a day, according to official figures published today. The Office of National Statistics estimate that 565,000 migrants arrived in Britain in 2005 intending to stay for at least a year. This is the second highest total recorded since 1991 and was partly fuelled by the EU accession of Poland and the other former communist east European states in April 2004. The annual level of migration from Britain has risen each year since 1998, when 251,000 left in the first full year of Tony Blair's government. Although the largest single increase in new migrants to Britain came from Poland, with 57,000 arriving in 2005 compared with only 17,000 the year before, more long term migrants actually came from India. A breakdown of the occupations of new migrants also shows that 170,000 of them describe themselves as 'professional or managerial' and only 143,000 intend to work in 'manual or clerical jobs'. Work is the most important reason for immigration to Britain with 28% having a definite job to go to and 15% of those who came said they were looking for work. The latest government estimates for the long-term immigration trend to Britain assume that it will continue at the slightly lower level of 145,000 a year.

At such level of immigration and emigration can we even imagine what can happen to our work force or our economy? Well the scene is not bad now..but it may be, if these things are left unchecked. Migration is not bad, but if it grows unabated, unchecked then probably it might cretae a problem for all of us. If we try to analyse the statistics we can see a alarming rate of swell in migration, be it In or be it Out. The maximum emigrationn for example is in employment area where foreign labour account for the maximum percentage. These things are hampering our economy as the resources being occupied by foreign labour drain the currency out of the country rather it remaining with us. Our people are loosing out jobs at the event of foreign labour. This is just an example. There are many more linked things liable to occur due to this sudden increase in migration factor. The government should take these things seriously as it is a matter of notional economy and security of british citizen's interest.
