‘I will never manage England’, says Beckham

David Beckham insists that although he played on the synthetic sports pitch in his day, he will never be manager for the England football team, however he has not ruled out the possibility of playing for England in the 2012 European Championships. By then he would be one of the oldest football players to play for the country at the age 37. In 2010, at age 35, Beckham was unable to play for England at the World Cup due to injuries and instead he acted as a member of England manager Fabio Capello’s staff team. He has been quoted by BBC Sport as saying that he currently has ‘no interest in becoming a coach’ and ‘no interest in being a manager’ for the team and said that England’s poor performance at the World Cup was due to players’ underperformance, rather than management failures. Beckham held firm the view that Capello could not be held responsible for England’s failures and said that the England team ‘just didn’t perform’ to the standards that were required of them in the most competitive sporting event in the world.

Beckham said that he didn’t believe there was any need for any serious changes in the team, however he did highlight that there were a number of new players waiting in the wings, ready to join the England squad in the future. He also did not rule out the possibility of moving into a managerial position at some point in the future and has said that he prefers to coach children rather than adult football players. Beckham also spoke of how he was proud of his record and contribution to English football, which has spanned more than a decade. He would not know whether he would playing in 2012 until nearer the time, saying that circumstances may change over the next few months. However, he was willing to accept the decision by the manager, whether he is picked or not for the next major tournament.
