As you all know from reading this blog, I am a massive fan of celebrity gossip but sometimes I feel things can be taken too far. When I was driving around trying to find a spot in the Manchester airport parking lot I heard on the radio that X factor finalist Katie Waissel wants to leave the show after she has been receiving death threats.
Most people would say that having the opportunity to take on your dream, being mentored by Cheryl Cole, and have loads of record agents listen to you sing would be worth the hassle that comes with being in the public spotlight. But this has been taken way too far, and no amount of fame is worth the distress that this young lady is currently up against.
The threats started coming with she beat out Gamu during the judges’ stage despite having a very public breakdown during performance. Now I understand that some people can get very ‘into’ these competitions. I myself will admit to being a little too hot headed at times, but death threats? Really? I would have thought that the British television public would be above that. Now, I am in no way saying that Katie should be the favorite to win, but surely she should at least be given the same chance to compete as everyone else. And there is no way that anyone should have to drop out because of ridiculous allegations like these ones.
This is one of those cases where I think that the reality in ‘reality tv’ has gone too far. I’m sure that no one is going to actually go through with these threats, but am a little bit confounded as to why people are making them in the first place. And although I think that reality TV has a lot of answer for, in this case it’s the fans that have gone a step too far.
